Microplastics are small plastic particles which are prevalent in the environment and researchers have now found them in our bodies as well. The main form of ingestion of microplastics are single-use plastics; such as plastic water bottles. Some water bottles could contain as much as 10,000 particles of microplastics [1] 

A study published in Environment International found microplastics in the blood samples of 17 out of 22 healthy adults in the Netherlands. This discovery supports the long-held suspicion among scientists that these tiny particles can be absorbed into the human bloodstream.[2]

The health risks of microplastics are still under investigation, but early studies indicate potential concerns. For example, research published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that microplastics and nanoplastics found in the plaques of human blood vessels may be associated with an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, or death.[3]
